Hysterosalpingography (HSG) is the Procedure for Diagnosis as well as treatment of blocked Fallopian Tubes and helps in detecting abnormalities of the uterus and the fallopian tubes. It provides an accurate picture of the site of obstruction in the tubes and in the uterus.
Blocked fallopian tubes as the cause of Infertility is seen in 30-40% of the infertile couples. Fallopian tubes carry woman’s eggs from her ovaries to her uterus (womb). If sperm and an egg meet in the fallopian tube, the egg is fertilized which then travels to the uterus and pregnancy begins. If the fallopian tubes are blocked, fertilization can’t happen.
The common causes of blocked fallopian tubes are infections, TB, repeated abortion, long-term usage of contraceptive devices.
This procedure is traditionally performed by Gynaecologists to diagnose tube blockade (not as a treatment to open the block). But they do it with crude , old and very painful technique. While now, interventional Radiologist do it using highly sophisticated thin tubes and catheters under image guidance thereby making it a completely painless and comfortable procedure.
With the technological advancement in the field of medicine, this procedure is now also used for a non-surgical treatment called “Fallopian tube catheterization” helps to open blocked tubes at the same sitting and same time to improve a woman’s chances of becoming pregnant. The procedure is done by a specially trained doctor called an interventional radiologist.
Due to lack of awareness about technological advancements in the field of medicine and newer non-surgical treatments, patients frequently undergo the painful gynecological procedure and surgical treatment which is done under general anesthesia, causes a surgical scar, long hospitalization and chances of infections.
Non-surgical treatment is performed by an interventional radiologist and benefits are no pain, no surgical scar, performed on outpatient / day care, patients are able to return to normal daily activities immediately. A patient with both side blocked tubes can have them fixed simultaneously in one sitting, No general anesthesia / sutures / infections & it is cost-effective also.
Dr.Pradeep Muley M.D. Head and Senior Consultant Interventional Radiologist at Fortis Hospital, Vasant Kunj, New Delhi says this non-surgical treatment for the opening of blocked fallopian tubes is now becoming popular in India like in western countries.
The examination is done within 6 to 10 days of the patient’s last menstrual period.
If the blockage is found, the treatment of opening of the tubes is done in the same sitting He inserts a thin tube inside the uterus and the very thin platinum wire passed through the fallopian tube on both sides under a vision of high-end digital monitor. Patient can watch the entire procedure on the computer monitor. The procedure usually takes 30 to 45 minutes and a patient can go home after one hr. After the Procedure, some women have mild bleeding for 3–5 days
